Vintage Rumours

This auction has ended.

Founded in 1910 in Akron, Ohio.
Moved in 1914 to Clarksburg, WestVirginia
Closed in 1951

Akro Agate Company of Clarksburg, West Virginia is famous as the maker of a special type of glass that consists of combining colors together to produce a "marbelized" product called marbles. The largest marbles were called "aggies" and they are especially desirable.

Many beautiful and prized marbles, most of which made by Akro Agate, are now collected by type and style or used in jewelry; especially rings.

From 1932-1951, Akro produced distinctive dinnerware products and children's dish sets.  Most of this product has deep opaque colors or marbelizations but they also had transparents too.  Some of the famous styles include concentric rings, wide vertical ribbing and/or both forms on the same piece.  Winged, solid handles on cups, sugars and creamers are almost always distinctively Akro.  Some molds were embossed with floral or deco formations.  Akro Agate made planters, flower pots, powder boxes, cigarette holders and a wide variety of ashtrays. Lamps, smoking stands, and bells.
